Project: URBAN OASIS

This urban yard required an updated landscape for the new homeowners. Restricted in space to a 40' x 40' space, with an overall grade change of 11' 6", extensive design and construction planning made this project a success. In 2004, The Beach Gardener received an award of Excellence in Residential Construction by Landscape Ontario Horticultural Trades Association.

A gunite plunge pool and separate spa were incorporated into the design. Creating a linear trough and a multiple weir water feature into the pool accommodated one of many grade changes. The pool was carefully placed to allow for planting on two sides, and access from the other two. Tall beech trees with ajuja under plantings provided privacy to the pool. Clean lines with subtle "swoops" in the stonework keep a formal yet original theme to the garden. The spa and pool copings sit flush to the middle terrace for a consistent look and ease of access, while all other elements are below or above this grade.

The lower patio provides access to the walkout and acts as an extension of the interior games room. A stainless steel outdoor fireplace was built into the retaining wall to add warmth and ambiance for those cooler fall evenings.

A chunky wooden pergola was installed over the third terrace area to enclose the dining space for an intimate feel. This terrace was enlarged and reconfigured and boasts simple shade gardens.

A new custom deck, with unique railings, panels, overhangs and stone insets into the decking provides the homeowner with ample space for barbequing. Solid horizontal bandings of cedar enclose the pool equipment and minimized sound pollution.

Carefully placed lighting fixtures highlight focal areas of the garden, and the effects are visible from indoors as well.
